There are stories from the Second World War on every Amsterdam street corner. These stories are too important to forget, yet are threatened with extinction.

On Remembrance Day, May 4th, Memorials of Amsterdam tells these stories and honors their main characters by turning outdoor adverts into temporary interactive memorials.

You can scan the QR-code on the billboard and listen to the stories that took place on your specific location

The challenge

How do you tell stories in audio that actually happened on a location you’re currently at, but happened in the past? Tell stories that are beyond any imagination? The audio concept is a cross-over between an Audiotour and a mini-series documentary-style Podcast, or better; Location-based Podcast episodes through the city of Amsterdam. Each story comes to life as an immersive 3D/ 8Dsound experience. The narrative is third-person perspective. 3D/ 8D sound design places the story around the listener in the exact GPS location, so listeners really feel the events unfolding. The music ensures recognisability in the prologue and epilogue of each story and adds an extra emotional layer without over-dramatising it. Staying true to the people and their stories.

The results

Thousands of people have listened to the stories on the 4th and 5th of May, creating a special moment of remembrance and make people aware of what happened on the place they were standing that day. Memorials of Amsterdam was also widely covered by local newspapers and national TV news stations and attracted interest from other cities wanting to join the initiative. Together, we’ll have an even greater impact, remembering more heroes in more places, and keeping their stories alive for generations to come.
