    Natuurgeheimen

A podwalk series for Natuurmonumenten in which the landscape tells its own stories. You download the free Natuurgeheimen app, pick a route and walk through the area with earphones in. Along the way you hear the stories that belong to that place.

Challenge

Many of the stories in the landscape have become invisible. Time passed and nature grew over them. Natuurmonumenten wanted to make them audible for young and old, without a ranger walking beside you. A text you hear while walking works differently from one you read, so we wrote for the ear. Rhythm and silence count as much as words. The podwalk also had to work with GPS and without mobile reception.

Result

Together with Natuurmonumenten we made the podwalk series Natuurgeheimen. We produced the audio and brought story, voice and sound together in walks you follow independently through the area using GPS. The app now has four routes.

Midden-Herenduin (3.5 km) lies in Nationaal Park Zuid-Kennemerland. During the Second World War, German soldiers built around 1,300 bunkers here. You walk past bunkers, trenches and a tank ditch and hear how the soldiers lived and waited. The Noordlaarderbos and Vijftig Bunder (6 km) are full of sagas and traces of the past. Mother Nature tells the story, voiced by Gerda Havertong. In the Waterloopbos (4 km), Jacob talks about his time as a student at the Waterloopkundig Laboratorium in the 1950s. At Gooilust (3 km) you hear about Louise Six and Frans Blaauw.

More routes are on the way.
