Metamorphoses at the Rijksmuseum with Stephen Fry

2026-02-06

Last night was the sparkling opening of the exhibition Metamorphoses at the Rijksmuseum, inspired by the legendary myths of Ovid, a monumental poem that tells the whole history of the world up to just after the year zero. In fifteen books it describes how people, gods and the world keep changing, from the creation out of Chaos to the deification of Julius Caesar.

Many artists have been inspired by the Metamorphoses over the centuries and their work is now on show, like this video installation of Medusa, half human, half snake.

Together with Stephen Fry, author of Mythos, we made an audio tour that takes you through these wondrous transformations. From Monday the exhibition is open to everyone who is curious.

Thanks to Rijksmuseum, Inge Willemsen, Stephen Fry, Jacqueline Blom and Rik Rensen.
